Technology evolves rapidly, and it can be challenging for policy and its implementation to evolve at the same pace. Last week, President Obama launched the Administration’s new Open Data Policy and Executive Order aimed at ensuring that data released by the government will be as accessible and useful as possible. To make sure this tech-focused policy can keep up with the speed of innovation, we created Project Open Data. Project Open Data is an online, public repository intended to foster collaboration and promote the continual improvement of the Open Data Policy.
Supporting Innovative Approaches to Spectrum Sharing
The President’s strategy for expanding the capacity of high-speed wireless broadband services across the Nation may get a boost from a new Defense Department Initiative to fund research and development of innovative new approaches to spectrum sharing. Under one strategy for maximizing spectrum efficiency, commercial broadband providers are permitted to share spectrum bands that otherwise would be allocated for exclusive Government use, or vice versa; this approach can increase the productivity of a band that was designated for a specific purpose decades ago but is underutilized today.
Open Government Data Spurs Entrepreneurship and Jobs
Our goal, as Presidential Innovation Fellows working with open data, has been to find, unlock, and promote the next wave of government data -- the next GPS -- that innovators can use to kickstart entrepreneurship, fuel new tools and apps, and create jobs.
